Habitat Dinner Auction

Habitat Office is Moving

For years the Habitat for Humanity of Lapeer County office space has been generously provided by HDC. This month the Habitat Office will to 431 N. Court Street, Lapeer, MI 48446. LeValley Rd. Ground Breaking

This past weekend was the official start of Saturday work. We celebrated with an opening ceremony and lots of guests shuttled to the site by a LakeVille Community Schools bus driven by a volunteer driver.

We welcomed 60 people to the ground breaking ceremony on Saturday with lots of food provided by volunteers from the Girl Scouts and a local church. Thanks to Pastor David Hudspeth and Fr. Phil for leading us in the blessings. Thanks also to the Columbiaville Village Leadership and LakeVille School superintendent for joining us and showing their support. We also want to thank our volunteers that day, including one woman who wanted to spend her birthday helping someone else.

Following our ceremony, volunteers got busy removing and bundling old thin fibreglass insulation and replacing ceiling insulation that had fallen, while Ryan Conley (new partner family dad) with the help of friends and volunteers did repairs by removing all of the existing shingles in just over an hour, repairing water damaged plywood, and blue tarping the now unprotected roof.

Join us this week if you can. We generally work every Wednesday, Thursday, and now Saturday except over holiday weekends and when the weather is bad. Lunch will be provided on Thursday and Saturday. We generally start our day around 9:00 am. If the ground is dry enough, we park at the worksite on the lawn at 4159 LeValley Rd, Columbiaville, MI (go to the southern edge of Columbiaville, turn east on Fifth St. which turns into LeValley Rd.

Our affiliate is blessed to have volunteers with many different talents all working toward a common goal to provide simple, decent and affordable housing. Committee work is an important part in accomplishing this mission. We are currently in need of committee members for the following committees:

Public Relations: This committee is responsible for creating awareness of the mission and vision of Habitat for Humanity of Lapeer County and Lapeer Habitat ReStore. They assist with the development of marketing materials, media relations, website content, social media content, and community calendars to help generate opportunities to spread the word about our organization’s work and needs.

Fund Development: This committee is responsible for fundraising, engaging potential sponsors, attracting donors and making sure that sponsors/donors are properly thanked for contributions.

Church Relations: The Church Relations Committee is responsible for fostering a strong partnership between Habitat for Humanity of Lapeer County and area churches. Partnerships with local church communities are a meaningful way to express faith through actions by serving those in need of simple, decent and affordable housing. This committee will provide information about our affiliate and invite church communities to join with us in a mission that makes us natural partners.

Volunteer Committee: Screen/Sign-up volunteers to work on home construction, fundraising events, community events, committees, office, or ReStore. Assist in coordinating volunteers during construction projects, tracking hours, and developing a system for volunteer recognition.

Boat Raffle

We are currently accepting applications for our next partner family. If your family, or a family you know, is in need of decent, affordable housing, please contact our Habitat Office at 664-7111. The Habitat affiliate will explain the application process and provide information on the availability, size and cost of Habitat homes in your area.

Habitat selects “partner families” to become Habitat homeowners based on 3 things:

Their level of need
Their willingness to become partners in the program and perform “sweat equity hours”
Their ability to repay the no-profit, no-interest loan

Habitat for Humanity follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing partner families.

On a recent trip to an Amish community I seen many beautifully hand made quilts. These quilts started at $800 and went upwards to several thousand. For only $1.00 per ticket, you could win our hand made Habitat quilt. The proceeds from this Quilt Raffle will be used on our next Habitat Home.

June 20, 2010, Project Home Update

Our home project has made great progress since beginning in early April and the last two weeks were super busy. It doesn't look like the same house with new overhangs, windows, and roof. We expect to finish siding by the middle of next week and then, except for driveway repairs and landscaping, the exterior will be finished.

On Saturday, we completed the new porch and roof on the house, and with the help of Gary Shindorf and great roofing volunteers from St Paul's Lutheran and the Girl Scout troop brothers and fathers, we removed the old shingles on the garage and totally re-roofed all on Saturday.

Jack Overzet and apprentice Anita Harrand completed the siding along the east side of the house.

The Girl Scouts and their families served a terrific lunch of hot dogs and brats, salad, fruit, dessert, and refreshments which was welcomed by the 20+ volunteers on site.

So far, we have completed rough inspections for heating and plumbing with electrical and rough construction inspections scheduled for late this week.

Our Efficient Foam installer is poised to come in to insulate the interior walls on about Monday, June 27th, and Brian Finnegan is ready to start hanging wall board right after the insulation inspection (hopefully by June 30 or July 1st).

This Wednesday and Thursday we will stud out the basement in preparation for insulating the perimeter walls and finish the railing and steps on the back deck. We will also work on siding this week through Saturday (weather permitting) with help from the Lapeer County Democratic Party and our regular volunteers.

We start each day at 9:00 am. Join us if you can and thanks for your support and encouragement.

New Expanded Store Hours

First St. Build Update

Our basement repair is finished and looks great. Richard Davis and crew dug deep to the footings around 3.5 sides of the house to reinforce and waterproof the basement walls. This corrected the cracked and bowed walls. They also installed a new egress window on the west side and new basement windows all around.

Our Weekday and Saturday crews finished installing Dow foam, housewrap, and the last new windows. We also began installing new soffit and facia. Thanks to Jack Overzet, Mike Foster, Keith Goulait, Sharon, Art, Tim, Mike M., Cheryl Holland, George, and Mike J. for their hard work.

On Saturday, Gary Shindorf installed the ridge vent on the roof, and Jim Hogan, Mike Marcott, Tim Brown, and George Daly assisted Mike Johns in building the front porch deck. Also, Ed Watteny and Gary Sabo finished the exterior insulation, housewrap, and window install with an assist from Art and Dennis.

This Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, we will continue to work on the porch, roof over the porch, soffitt and facia, and will begin installing siding. We could also use some help with moving dirt and smoothing out the soil around the perimeter of the house which was disturbed during basement repairs. Extra rakes and shovels and a wheel barrow or two would be helpful.

We hope to have the rough plumbing (Lance Gould Plumbing) and rough electrical (Porter and Heckman's Brandon Craft) completed and inspected by Friday so we can get Efficient Foam (John Carlson) insulation sprayed early next week. If that schedule works out, we could begin hanging drywall (with Brian Finnegan) around June 17th or 18th. Our new furnace and ductwork was completed several weeks ago by Hill Heating and Cooling (Paul Hill).
